The Leechburg Area Museum and Historical Society

Allegheny Township
Kittanning
Rain or shine, sleet or snow, we are always ready to welcome visitors to our small city along the eastern bank of the Allegheny River north of Pittsburgh. Highways 28 and 66 link Kittanning to points north and south, 422 narrowly misses downtown Kittanning when travelers drive east and west. Numerous smaller highways and roads crisscross the lush Pennsylvania countryside nearby, making exploration easy and fun for the whole family.
Freeport
was derived from Depreciation Lands - land designated as payment to Revolutionary War Soldiers for their services. This land, two tracts named Union and Friendship, was conveyed to William and David Todd.
Arnold
The City of Arnold is located on the historic Allegheny River in the northwest corner of Westmoreland County. It is a community with a diverse and interesting history that grew up, so to speak, during the heyday of the steel industry that surrounded the Pittsburgh area.
Lower Burrell
Today, the City of Lower Burrell is still one of the youngest Third Class Cities in the State of Pennsylvania. 1999 marked the 40th. anniversary of the city becoming a Third Class City.

New Kensington
New Kensington was founded in 1891. In 1890 the Burrell Improvement Company considered the advantages of the level land south of its home in Lower Burrell, and deemed it a prime location for a city and named the area "Kensington" (later changed to "New Kensington" for postal purposes, because Pennsylvania already had another city with that name).
Westmoreland County
Pennsylvania's Westmoreland County was formed by an Act of Assembly, approved by Governor Richard Penn, on February 26, 1773.
Washington Township
Washington Township is surrounded by Oklahoma Boro and Allegheny Township to the north, Upper Burrell Township to the west, Bell Township to the east, Murrysville and Salem Township to the south. Beaver Run Reservoir runs along the entire eastern boundary:

Thanks Deb Vargo! Congratulations and thanks to Deb Vargo from First Commonwealth Bank in downtown Leechburg! Deb was the recipent of the bank's "Golden Tower Award" for communty service. She personally received $1,000 and was given the option to donate $1,000 to her favorite non profit. Deb choose to donate the money to LACA and we are so appreciative! Thanks Deb!

Drug Awareness Program Leechburg Elks Bring Drug Awareness Program to Leechburg Elementary School Major Anthony Shea Jr, USAF/Ret, Leechburg Elks Drug Awareness Chairman recently presented two Drug Awareness assemblies at Leechburg Elementary School for the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. Lieutenant Tom Dubovi of the PA State Police, District Magistrate Gary DeComo of Ford City, and Denise Marano from ARC Manor in Kittanning were featured as speakers. Approximately 200 students participated in the two assemblies. Each child received a red ribbon, a Drug Awareness coloring book, book mark, and pencil, and a candy treat.The children were given valuable information on the effects of drugs on their bodies and their futures and were given the opportunity to have their quest ions concerning drugs answered by those professionals who deal with the results of drug use on a daily basis. The students were also invited to participate in the Elks Drug Awareness Poster Contest. This years theme for the contest is “Get Smart - Don't Start"..

WBN Meetings The Amstrong-Kiski Area Chapter of the Women's Business Network meets the 2nd and 4th Monday's each month at 8:30 a.m. at Garda's Restaurant located on RR 66 in Ford City. The group is open to local area women business owners and those in sales in the Armstrong, Ford City and surrounding areas who would like to meet to network and share ideas to expand their business. Members are able to grow their circle of influence, improve their "60-second" commercial, and create lasting business and personal relationships within a supportive environment. Leechburg Elks Lodge 377 Recently held a Karaoke Contest to raise money for the PA Elks Home Service Nurse Program, which is dedicated to helping persons with developmental disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, Down syndrome and hearing and visual impairments, to name just a few. This Pennsylvania Elks Program is a TOTALLY FREE service that is available in any of the 67 counties comprising the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. All administrative expenses are provided for by a grant from the Elks National Foundation, therefore every dollar earned by the Elks lodges goes directly to help the children and adults in our area. The audience watched as many talented local singers vied for the top prize of $100. The winners, by vote of the au dience were; First Place, Marcie Covey, sponsored by Uncle Charlie’s Sausages; Second Place, Barb Shipman; and Third Place, Kim McHenry, sponsored by H & R Block. . The Lodge thanks our DJ, Stan Zydonik Jr., and Master of Ceremonies, Eric Swerczeski, who donated thier services, all of the singers who participated, the audience, and all of the generous businesses and individuals who contributed their time, talents, and donations to make this event possible
