Leechburg?s garden project was the outcome of a volunteer initiative involving Armstrong County Master Gardeners and LACA started in 2007. We hope to raise money to fund the Garden Projects? goal of making Leechburg a more attractive place through planting and garden maintenance done strictly by a force of proactive volunteers. A simple idea that, we hope, has a big impact on the quality of life in our small town. Master gardeners are men and women who have been given forty, fifty, or more hours of intense training in all aspects of home horticulture by Penn State University Extension Service professionals. In return, they have given an equal number of hours (sometimes many, many more) teaching others about gardening. They are the ?take it to the streets? part of university horticulture departments.
The garden project started with money donated by friends and family of longtime Leechburg resident, Modesta Banichar. In honor of her 90th birthday and her intense love of gardening, Ms. Banichar?s closest acquaintances decided to start a fund to help beautify her hometown which she treasured dearly.
In March, LACA began their (now infamous) ?Flamingo Fundraiser? where bright pink plastic flamingos were placed at Dr. Fraley?s park and then sold for $25.00 each. This simple idea created quite a buzz in town and was also a very successful way to create funds to keep the project going. If you would like to purchase a flamingo who currently resides at Dr. Fraley?s park please contact LACA at 724-845-2244. All proceeds from the purchases of the flamingos go directly to benefit the Leechburg Garden project.
Last, but certainly not least, we have been approved to receive an $11,815.00 grant from the Armstrong County Growing Greener Initiative. We are currently in the second phase of being awarded that money which we hope will be in our account for next year?s planting season. Our plans for the grant money include: Removing trees and planting new rhododendrons at Dr. Fraley?s park, improving the island gardens as well as the Riverside park gardens.
Accomplishments
Trees downtown: Manicured and pruned all trees. Removed dirt under the trees and replaced with new dirt and mulch, then planted annuals and perennials beneath the trees.
Placed planters filled with annuals around town including in the island.
Started a compost pile.
Currently working on reviving the atmosphere at Riverside Park.
We?d like to thank local Girl Scout troop lead by Leeann Stuckley for all their help with this project.
